And why would it matter if I can fly a Lunar ship?
His gaze cut through her, saying more than his words. He stood. “Just be ready.”

“When Cress thought she was in love with me, she was actually in love with this other guy she’d made up in her head, who was all brave and selfless and stuff . . . I kind of wish I was that guy.” he shrugged.
“Are you so sure you’re not?”
He is a deserter from the military of the American Republic and wanted for theft internationally. He is cocky and flirtatious and tends to make light of most situations. He insists on being called “Captain” even though he is still a cadet.
“Jacin,’”she said, with a shaky smile. “You must know. I cannot remember a time when I didn’t love you. I don’t think such a time ever existed.”
Stepdaughter of Queen Levana. She is regarded as the most beautiful person on Luna, even with three scars on her cheek, which are rumored to have been caused by a jealous Levana. She refuses to use her Lunar gift of glamouring and manipulation and, as a result, has slowly been losing her mind.
“I can’t,” he said. “I won’t. Please . . . please spare her. Take away her title. Turn her into a servant. Or banish her to the outer sectors and you’ll never hear from her again, I promise you . . .”

Selene. She was meant to die thirteen years ago, yet here she was, disastrously alive. And just as Levana had feared back then, she would take everything from her. Everything that Levana had worked so hard for.
It made her sick. Why couldn’t Selene have died, easily, mercifully, the way she’d planned?

I want the same thing every Renegade does. Justice.
Adrian is the adopted child of Captain Chromium and the Dread Warden, two of the original Renegades. Adrian’s superpower is that he can make anything he draws real—which may not sound all that tough but comes in handy more often than you might think. Recently he’s become obsessed with catching a villain who goes by the name Nightmare, after she attempted to assassinate one of his dads. Adrian is the leader of his Renegade squad, and his friends respect his sense of morality and justice. But he also has a big secret he hasn’t told any of them yet.

Ruby is practical, strong, and fiercely loyal. She and Oscar have a thing—but neither of them will admit it.
Don’t knock the cafeteria. It is free and it is awesome.
As Smokescreen, Oscar has been known to take down enemies of extreme strength. His ability to create smoke out of thin air makes him a master of the sneak attack and a force to be reckoned with. But when Oscar is off duty, he’s just a normal teenage guy—showing off his powers, constantly eating, and poking fun at his teammates. Oscar was born with a bone disease, walks with a cane, and is a total flirt. But the flirting is mostly for show—he only has eyes for Ruby.
I worry that calling them butterflies all the time undermines how remarkable of an ability it really is. Like saying, hey, I can turn into rainbows and daisies!
As Monarch, Danna can transform into a swarm of butterflies at will to easily evade attack. She also uses her power to infiltrate hard-to-reach places, to eavesdrop on important conversations, and to gather hyper-awareness of her surroundings. Don’t be fooled by her dainty butterflies, though—Danna is as tough as nails.
Do you think I might be evil? Or . . . that I have some evil powers in me?
Max looks like a normal kid, but really he is anything but. His powers are officially listed as classified, but whatever they are, they are strong enough to have kept him in quarantine his whole life. Some say he’s dangerous. Others say he’s valuable. Either way, he is an honorary member of Adrian’s Renegade squad.
Do you have what it takes to be a hero? Ugh. Stab me with an egg beater.
Ever since the day her family was murdered, Nova has been unable to sleep. But she doesn’t miss it. In fact, her insomnia is part of her superpower: She never sleeps, and can put others to sleep just by touching them. After her family was taken from her, Nova was raised by the Anarchists, a group of villains who live hidden beneath the city, lying in wait to take down the Renegades and reclaim Gatlon for themselves. But now Nova is old enough to participate in the Renegade trials and potentially infiltrate their ranks. If she makes it through the trials, the Anarchists may come out of hiding.
From pharmaceuticals to ridding one’s home of vermin, there are a thousand reasons one might have had one of my poisons, and not all of those reasons are nefarious or illegal.
Leroy spends his days in a lab deep in the tunnels beneath the city, mixing chemicals and developing deadly poisons. He has burned off both of his eyebrows during experiments, always smells like chemicals, and even oozes poison from his pores. After Nova’s family was killed, Leroy became something of a father figure to her, and he is her favorite of all the Anarchists.
It’s good to be queen.
Honey is vain and a bit of a drama queen, back when the Anarchists ruled the streets of Gatlon she loved to get dressed up and go out on the town. She is in control of hundreds of bees—and hornets, and wasps . . . basically anything with a stinger. Honey is fiercely protective of her so-called “babies,” and they will follow any command she gives. She never wears lipstick, preferring to coat her lips in honey.
It’s horrible to go through all this plotting and have no one around to appreciate it.
As Detonator, Ingrid can create bombs out of thin air and is an explosives expert. Impulsive, ruthless, and volatile, Ingrid is extremely dangerous. You’d better be on her good side if you want to stay in one piece. In Ingrid’s opinion, the Anarchists have been too patient for too long. It’s time to wreak some havoc, and if you disagree, stay out of the way.
Let them laugh. They won’t be laughing for much longer.
Of all the Anarchists, Phobia is the most mysterious. Nova has never seen him out of uniform, and has never known any name for him other than his alias. Some describe him as the embodiment of fear. He can control shadows to obscure himself and others, and he also can identify—and amplify—anyone’s deepest, darkest fears. He is always cloaked in shadow and carries a scythe.
