WHO WOULD YOU BE IF YOU WERE A CHARACTER IN THE UNIVERSE OF THE LUNAR CHRONICLES?

MEET THE CHARACTERS

Cinder

Linh Cinder
Notes on file:
  • Closest with her stepsister Peony
  • Can’t cry (no tear ducts) or blush due to her cyborg modifications
  • Rightful heir to the throne of Luna

Her fears started to melt away. She didn’t know if her video had persuaded every civilian to join her cause, and maybe not even most of them. But the sight before her was proof that her revolution had begun.

Cinder is the central heroine of the Lunar Chronicles. She is 36.28 percent cyborg, with a prosthetic hand and leg as well as other internal wires and systems. She works as a mechanic in the marketplace of New Beijing. She is the leader of her small crew of revolutionaries, but often second-guesses her skills and is self-conscious about her cyborg attributes. Queen Levana wants her dead.

Kai

Prince Kaito
Notes on file:
  • Prince and heir to the Eastern Commonwealth
  • Skilled ballroom dancer
  • Admirable politician

Oh, I fully intend to form an alliance with Luna…I just intend to put a different queen on the throne first.

After the death of his father, Kai became Emperor at a very young age. He is kind and cares deeply for his people and country. Other world leaders believe he is too young to lead. But Kai always chooses what is right for his people, even if he must sacrifice his own happiness.

Scarlet

Scarlet Benoit
Notes on file:
  • Does not fall in love easily
  • Often wears a red hoodie
  • Trained by her grandmother to be a pilot

And why would it matter if I can fly a Lunar ship?

His gaze cut through her, saying more than his words. He stood. “Just be ready.”

Scarlet lives on a farm in France with her grandmother. She has curly red hair and lots of freckles, and is most comfortable in jeans and a sweatshirt. She is frank and abrupt, with a tendency to act first and think later. She is cautious of newcomers and takes a while to warm up to them and trust them.

Wolf

Ze’ev “Wolf” Kesley
Notes on file:
  • Drafted to be in Queen Levana’s army when he was twelve
  • Has a tattoo that reads Lsop962
  • Scarlet is his alpha female

Then Wolf was gone—hurling himself past the group and tearing open the front door.

A street fighter and former special operative in the Lunar army. He is powerful and intimidating, but he can also be shy and quiet around most people. He is protective of Scarlet.

Cress

Cress Darnell
Notes on file:
  • Trapped on a satellite that orbits around Earth approximately every sixteen hours
  • Talented programmer / hacker
  • Loves watching net dramas

I hope this message reaches you safely. I . . . I miss you.

She opened her mouth to say more, but hesitated and shut it again. A second later, the message ended.

A Lunar shell confined to a satellite to aid Queen Levana with hacking and surveillance of Earthen countries. She is petite with a heart-shaped face and freckles. She has an overactive imagination and is sometimes nervous around people due to her isolation growing up.

Thorne

Captain Carswell Thorne
Notes on file:
  • Dreams of being the captain of his own ship
  • Sentenced to solitary confinement in an Eastern Commonwealth prison after stealing a spaceship and starting a riot over bad soap
  • Uses the passcode “captain is king”

“When Cress thought she was in love with me, she was actually in love with this other guy she’d made up in her head, who was all brave and selfless and stuff . . . I kind of wish I was that guy.” he shrugged.

“Are you so sure you’re not?”

He is a deserter from the military of the American Republic and wanted for theft internationally. He is cocky and flirtatious and tends to make light of most situations. He insists on being called “Captain” even though he is still a cadet.

Winter

Princess Winter Blackburn-Hayle
Notes on file:
  • Father was a royal guard before marrying Queen Levana
  • Suffers from hallucinations
  • Strong attachment to Sir Jacin Clay since childhood

“Jacin,’”she said, with a shaky smile. “You must know. I cannot remember a time when I didn’t love you. I don’t think such a time ever existed.”

Stepdaughter of Queen Levana. She is regarded as the most beautiful person on Luna, even with three scars on her cheek, which are rumored to have been caused by a jealous Levana. She refuses to use her Lunar gift of glamouring and manipulation and, as a result, has slowly been losing her mind.

Jacin

Jacin Clay
Notes on file:
  • Strong attachment to Princess Winter, even though he tries to hide it
  • Wants to be a doctor
  • Hides true intentions behind snark

“I can’t,” he said. “I won’t. Please . . . please spare her. Take away her title. Turn her into a servant. Or banish her to the outer sectors and you’ll never hear from her again, I promise you . . .”

Personal guard and pilot for the head thaumaturge in the Lunar Army. He has an abrasive personality and can be quiet and surly. But he will do anything to protect the ones he truly cares about.

Iko

Iko
Notes on file:
  • Best friend of Linh Cinder
  • Unique personality for an android
  • Hopeless romantic

“We all have our weaknesses.”

“I know,’ said Iko. ‘Mine is shoes.”

Iko is an android for the Linh family, and in the beginning of the Lunar Chronicles is Cinder’s closest friend. Iko has a glitch in her programming that gives her a stronger personality than most androids. She is very concerned with her looks. She is a little bit boy crazy and likes to flirt.

Levana

Queen Levana Blackburn
Notes on file:
  • Removed all mirrors from Luna when she became queen
  • Plotting a marriage with Emperor Kai
  • Some say she’s responsible for the unfortunate death of Princess Selene

Selene. She was meant to die thirteen years ago, yet here she was, disastrously alive. And just as Levana had feared back then, she would take everything from her. Everything that Levana had worked so hard for.

It made her sick. Why couldn’t Selene have died, easily, mercifully, the way she’d planned?

The power-obsessed Queen of Luna. She uses her Lunar gift of glamour to control her subjects, and sometimes wears a white veil to hide her true appearance. She will do anything to get what she wants, and she wants Linh Cinder dead.

Whats Your Extraordinary Power Quiz

MEET THE CHARACTERS

Sketch

Adrian
Notes on file:

Power: Artwork genesis

I want the same thing every Renegade does. Justice.

Adrian is the adopted child of Captain Chromium and the Dread Warden, two of the original Renegades. Adrian’s superpower is that he can make anything he draws real—which may not sound all that tough but comes in handy more often than you might think. Recently he’s become obsessed with catching a villain who goes by the name Nightmare, after she attempted to assassinate one of his dads. Adrian is the leader of his Renegade squad, and his friends respect his sense of morality and justice. But he also has a big secret he hasn’t told any of them yet.

Red Assassin

Ruby
Notes on file:

Power: Hemo-transformation

I mean, I would kill someone. If I had to. If someone’s life was in danger or something.

As a child, Ruby endured a terrifying injury, and the wound has still not healed. But it doesn’t hinder her—oh, no. When she bleeds, her blood transforms into super-sharp red gemstones that she uses as weapons. Her favorite weapon is her bloodstone grappling hook and wire. Ruby is practical, strong, and fiercely loyal. She and Oscar have a thing—but neither of them will admit it.

Smokescreen

Oscar
Notes on file:

Power: Smoke and vapor control

Don’t knock the cafeteria. It is free and it is awesome.

As Smokescreen, Oscar has been known to take down enemies of extreme strength. His ability to create smoke out of thin air makes him a master of the sneak attack and a force to be reckoned with. But when Oscar is off duty, he’s just a normal teenage guy—showing off his powers, constantly eating, and poking fun at his teammates. Oscar was born with a bone disease, walks with a cane, and is a total flirt. But the flirting is mostly for show—he only has eyes for Ruby.

Monarch

Danna
Notes on file:

Power: Metamorphosis

I worry that calling them butterflies all the time undermines how remarkable of an ability it really is. Like saying, hey, I can turn into rainbows and daisies!

As Monarch, Danna can transform into a swarm of butterflies at will to easily evade attack. She also uses her power to infiltrate hard-to-reach places, to eavesdrop on important conversations, and to gather hyper-awareness of her surroundings. Don’t be fooled by her dainty butterflies, though—Danna is as tough as nails.

The Bandit

Max
Notes on file:

Power: Classified

Do you think I might be evil? Or . . . that I have some evil powers in me?

Max looks like a normal kid, but really he is anything but. His powers are officially listed as classified, but whatever they are, they are strong enough to have kept him in quarantine his whole life. Some say he’s dangerous. Others say he’s valuable. Either way, he is an honorary member of Adrian’s Renegade squad.

Nightmare/Insomnia

Nova
Notes on file:

Power: Tranquiliziation

Do you have what it takes to be a hero? Ugh. Stab me with an egg beater.

Ever since the day her family was murdered, Nova has been unable to sleep. But she doesn’t miss it. In fact, her insomnia is part of her superpower: She never sleeps, and can put others to sleep just by touching them. After her family was taken from her, Nova was raised by the Anarchists, a group of villains who live hidden beneath the city, lying in wait to take down the Renegades and reclaim Gatlon for themselves. But now Nova is old enough to participate in the Renegade trials and potentially infiltrate their ranks. If she makes it through the trials, the Anarchists may come out of hiding.

Cyanide

Leroy
Notes on file:

Power: Alchemy

From pharmaceuticals to ridding one’s home of vermin, there are a thousand reasons one might have had one of my poisons, and not all of those reasons are nefarious or illegal.

Leroy spends his days in a lab deep in the tunnels beneath the city, mixing chemicals and developing deadly poisons. He has burned off both of his eyebrows during experiments, always smells like chemicals, and even oozes poison from his pores. After Nova’s family was killed, Leroy became something of a father figure to her, and he is her favorite of all the Anarchists.

Queen Bee

Honey
Notes on file:

Power: Anthophilia

It’s good to be queen.

Honey is vain and a bit of a drama queen, back when the Anarchists ruled the streets of Gatlon she loved to get dressed up and go out on the town. She is in control of hundreds of bees—and hornets, and wasps . . . basically anything with a stinger. Honey is fiercely protective of her so-called “babies,” and they will follow any command she gives. She never wears lipstick, preferring to coat her lips in honey.

Detonator

Ingrid
Notes on file:

Power: Explosives

It’s horrible to go through all this plotting and have no one around to appreciate it.

As Detonator, Ingrid can create bombs out of thin air and is an explosives expert. Impulsive, ruthless, and volatile, Ingrid is extremely dangerous. You’d better be on her good side if you want to stay in one piece. In Ingrid’s opinion, the Anarchists have been too patient for too long. It’s time to wreak some havoc, and if you disagree, stay out of the way.

Phobia

Phobia
Notes on file:

Power: Fright and shadow control

Let them laugh. They won’t be laughing for much longer.

Of all the Anarchists, Phobia is the most mysterious. Nova has never seen him out of uniform, and has never known any name for him other than his alias. Some describe him as the embodiment of fear. He can control shadows to obscure himself and others, and he also can identify—and amplify—anyone’s deepest, darkest fears. He is always cloaked in shadow and carries a scythe.
